Dubbed the enfant terrible of fashion ever since his prêt-à-porter collections were first shown in 1976, Jean Paul Gaultier, whose avant-garde and bold fashions very early on reflected the issues facing contemporary society, is one of the leading designers in recent decades.

Published by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and Abrams in conjunction with the first-ever retrospective on Gaultier, this stunning hardcover book in a slipcase explores the ties between the designer and the pop/rock music scene, film, and dance, and sheds light on his sources of inspiration, which are as eclectic as they are impertinent.

The first major monograph on Gaultier brings together archival documents and over fifty interviews with Gaultier’s muses and colleagues, as well as the artists he has created costumes for: Pedro Almodóvar, Catherine Deneuve, Madonna, Helen Mirren, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, Martin Margiela, Pierre Cardin, Dita Von Teese, Marion Cotillard, Kylie Minogue, Polly Mellen, and Tom Ford, to name just a few.

It features many previously unpublished illustrations thanks to the collaboration of renowned fashion photographers and the Maison Jean Paul Gaultier. The publication also includes two interviews with Gaultier, one by Florence Müller, art historian, and the other by Thierry-Maxime Loriot, as well as an interview with Valerie Steele, fashion historian and director of New York’s Museum at Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). An essay written by Suzy Menkes looks at Gaultier’s fashion shows and examines their visionary reflection of society’s evolution over the past thirty-five years.

The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier. From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk is the first exhibition dedicated to the famous French couturier.

 

Created and toured by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in partnership with the House of Jean Paul Gaultier, this exhibition promises to immerse visitors in the couturier’s creative world.

 

More than 175 pieces of haute couture and prêt-à-porter clothing, as well as accessories from the period 1976 to 2016 are being presented to the public using innovative scenography created by Agence Projectile with help from Sandra Gagné from the MMFA, with the added panache of avant-garde theatrical company UBU and its artistic directors Denis Marleau and Stéphanie Jasmin, responsible for the audiovisual effects used to animate the faces of 30 mannequins provided by Jolicœur International.

 

By projecting some very special videos onto them, the mannequins appear to ‘talk’ to visitors as part of an extraordinary multimedia experience.

 

Artist Odile Gilbert was tasked with adorning each of them in unique style with a headdress, wig or other spectacular hairpiece specially crafted for the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibition.

 

Other creations, not to mention documents, videos and photographs from the archives will also be exhibited for the first time, many of which are the fruit of various artistic collaborations.

 

These collaborations have incorporated a wide range of disciplines close to the couturier’s heart, including: cinema (Pedro Almodovar, Luc Besson, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, etc.), fashion photography (Peter Lindbergh, David LaChapelle, Richard Avedon, Mario Testino, Pierre & Gilles, etc.), music (costumes for Kylie Minogue, Madonna, Mylène Farmer, etc. on their world tours), dance (Angelin Prejlocaj, Régine Chopinot, Maurice Béjart, etc.) and pop culture in general (television programmes, video clips, etc.).

 

Going further than a retrospective, this exhibition has been a creative process in itself, charting the extraordinary world of Jean Paul Gaultier, not chronologically, but thematically, around his greatest preoccupations: The Odyssey, Boudoir, Skin Deep, Punk Cancan, Urban Jungle, Metropolis, etc.

 

To date, the exhibition has been admired by over 2 million visitors across 12 locations around the world.

 

Receiving its world premiere in Montreal in 2011, it then went to Dallas, followed by San Francisco, Madrid, Rotterdam, Stockholm, New York, London and Melbourne, before arriving at the Grand Palais in Paris in 2015 and moving on to Munich after that then finally ending up in Seoul, South Korea.

‘When The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier exhibition ends in Seoul in June 2016, it will be exactly five years since it first opened at the MMFA. Who could have imagined the incredible journey it has been? Over the course of these past five years, the MMFA has transported, installed and dismantled all 14 tonnes of exhibition material a total of 12 times, travelling all over the world and being critically acclaimed everywhere it goes. A record success among fashion exhibitions! ‘Given the inexhaustible scope of Jean Paul Gaultier’s inspiration, we have been able to adapt and revisit the exhibition for different venues on four continents, expressing the designer’s generosity and open mindedness at each of the 12 locations – a designer who has been celebrating the beauty of difference, whether cultural, aesthetic or social through his work for almost 40 years now’ – Thierry-Maxime Loriot, curator of the exhibition.

 

The exhibition also gave rise to the publication of an eponymous book published by the MMFA’s scientific press in collaboration with Les Editions de la Martinière in 2011. The catalogue spanning 424 pages has picked up various prizes, including the main prize for a fashion book, awarded by those on the master’s in fashion design course at the International Fashion Design & Business School in Lyon. It is available in three languages (English, French and Spanish).

 

A second book, published by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, has been produced in French with help from La Réunion des Musées Nationaux. An English version was produced for the exhibition in Seoul. This veritable portfolio of artwork incorporates 80% new images, previously unpublished for the most part, thanks to contributions from the most famous photographers (Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, Peter Lindbergh, Paolo Roversi, Mario Testino, David LaChapelle, Helmut Newton), as well as many artists (Roe Etheridge, Pierre & Gilles, Nan Goldin, Andy Warhol, Liu Bolin, Jean-Paul Goude, Annie Kevans, Izima Kaoru). The book is available in three languages (French, English and German). (288 pages, 220 illustrations, under the direction of Thierry-Maxime Loriot.)

 

In total, six different volumes will have been produced off the back of this record-breaking touring exhibition.

BOOK REVIEW:
‘Catalogue’ seems an inadeqaute description for the huge book which accompanied the exhibition of French haute couturier designer/TV presnter Jean Paul Gaultier. The exhibition had manequins with faces projected on them creating the surreal world of beautifully dressed manequins who were speaking to each other along with the kilted man himself talking about his work. So for a wonderful exhibition a wonderful book which showcases the overwhelming tallent giving an insight into the thinking processes of the sometimes controversial designer, charting the influences and inspiration from films, the street, music, history, bondage and corsetry and the beautiful Paris inspired collection.
 
A beautifully designed book with a transparent nautical striped (of course) slipcase cover which slips up to reveal images in strips, showing a clever use of static imagery creating a kind of animation. Wonderful book, highly recommended.
