Ottawa AF2020

A diverse showcase of art & creative community

“Creativity is contagious; pass it on.”– Albert Einstein

The National Capital Region features a dynamic constellation of independent practitioners and collectives, artist-run spaces, art schools, commercial galleries and public art initiatives. This “biome” also includes curators and animators, arts administrators, collection managers, conservation and framing specialists, buyers and beholders.  A healthy and sustainable art eco-system needs all of these interdependent entities, and most especially, must create ways to break out of the habits of familiarity and foster unexpected intersections.

This new ‘happening’ at Makerspace North is the first of a series of a special events created to serve as a hub space and performance stage for the immersive presentation of new works by emerging and established artists, complemented by a dynamic daily program of TED-style talks, discussion round tables, performances, demonstrations and workshops.

Why an art fair in Ottawa?

Traditionally, international art fairs have been created to facilitate the task of buying art, for the buyer, investor & collector. One shopping location, divided into booths in one large & spectacular venue, where everyone gathers, gawks, gossips and hopefully spends a fortune.

For Ottawa to host an art related event of this scale, I believe a new formula must be specifically created for Ottawa. This is a city that does not pretend to be another; it is young at heart and deserves a fresh approach at inviting the public to see what we have to offer. We must take away any preconceived notion that our very own art community is for a specific audience. It’s for everyone.

Ottawa AF2019 could be the catalyst in engaging dialogue, but mainly, to make connections within our own community, with not only our local art establishments & commercial galleries, but with existing artist studios, art appraisers, auction houses, framers and printers, local businesses that feature art on a regular basis, and even have access to private collectors homes.

Once we see the potential, our very own art fair could possibly be a combination of the very best, from the obvious to hidden gems.
