Artist Statement:
Richard – Florida 1983
I met Richard in winter 1983 when my family and I were vacationing in Clearwater Beach, Florida. I noticed him at our hotel’s pool because he was highly energetic and clearly wanted attention. He was allowed to use the pools of various hotels along the beach because he was friendly and lived a few blocks away. He noticed I was taking photographs of my family at the pool and offered himself as my subject. Our photo related friendship began. Richard was only 15 years old and I was 26. Whenever I had free time, we hung out, talked about our different lives and took photos. He asked to borrow my professional camera for a school project where he had to present something that interested him. I was very skeptical about lending it to him, but he took me to his house to show where he lived in case he failed to return my camera the following day as promised. I was convinced. My camera was returned the following day with great excitement as his presentation was impressive.
As our vacation was ending, we exchanged addresses and phone numbers, so I could mail him prints of our best images. Back in Toronto I received a phone call from his mother. She told me that Richard had never taken to liking an older male figure as he had to me. She further explained that she was at a loss at how to mother a very rebellious son who had disrupted the family for years. She asked me if I would fly him to Toronto and adopt him. I was stunned and had to turn her down. I never heard from Richard or saw him again.

Gun Roze: New York City, Then and Now

Photographer Gun Roze is one of my most prolific friends online, sharing photographs he makes mostly in and around New York City and Brooklyn. Interested in natural composition and juxtaposition, Gun shoots somewhat from the hip, snatching little vignettes. In the early 80s he visited New York from his home in Toronto and shot a lot on the streets of Manhattan, neglecting this trove of photographs until recently. In the meantime he became a master photographic printer, working both here in the US and back in Canada. Gun rediscovered these files, and serendipity led to a few of his images being included in “NYC c. 1985” at ClampArt in New York’s Chelsea in 2013. So here are a few shots from the 80s, and some from the last couple of years. I think you’ll work out which is which.
