Press release:

Local artist Peter Shmelzer will be showcasing new work this October at?La Petite Mort Gallery. These new paintings deal with the intricacies of the human experience and the relative likelihood of success or failure in the increasingly complex world in which we live. His primary theme addresses the ways in which we are all linked, in spite of our efforts to isolate ourselves, and the profound repercussions of our behaviour on those around us. In a broader sense, the works explore the effects of a culture on the population that inspired it or, conversely, the effects of a culture fabricated artificially in advance of popular consent. Is our social and cultural environment a consequence of our collective desire or has our will and vision been subverted to a mechanism that exists beyond the bounds of conscience, effectively controlling the progress of industry and culture. These paintings convey the apprehension and also the enthusiasm that become so pronounced in periods of great change and upheaval.

Testimonial:
“In his art, Schmelzer visually represents an abject world of absurdity, insanity, perversity and ugliness. His paintings depict humanoid and animated creatures that seem to speak for all these dark and destructive forces that, in fact, constitute an indelible part of what is to be a human”.
