Artist Statement:
The fashion photograph -and its close cousin, advertising – are photography’s gift to the world. The constant promise of perfection on billboards and the pages of magazines is
absorbed into our collective consciousness day after day. But, in fact, what I have continually found striking about these images is their persistent sameness and their almost universal expressionlessness, which combine to create a kind of “familiar anonymity”. This is something that photography does exceedingly well.
These faces and figures of fashion– flawless yet lifeless – inspired this body of work. The bright promise of a new and improved self, of prolonged youth and beauty and endless life has so many implications and is certainly deeply rooted in these images. The works in this show are my attempt to take this promise one step further toward its inevitable conclusion. Karina Kraenzle, 2006
