BIOGRAPHY:

I am a London Guildhall University BA graduate, completed in 2003 majoring in Fine Art (with a specialized focus in Photography and Moving Image). Raised in the outskirts of London within an artistic family, I grew up with a keen interest in skateboarding and music, both of which directly influenced my interest in the arts. In 2004 I moved to New York after assisting top-tier portrait & fashion photographers in London and working for a summer at the legendary publication Dazed & Confused. In early years I assisted numerous photographers in New York while also running a small darkroom on Canal Street, where I would carefully develop my own photographs into the early hours of the morning. Those endless hours spent mark the inception of an ongoing love affair with not only the photographic image, but also the process behind it.

My first editorial commission came in 2007 for Interview Magazine and in 2008 I was the recipient of the prestigious PDN’s 30 award. Soon after my work made regular appearances in New York Magazine, The New Yorker, T: The New York Times Style Magazine, Rolling Stone, W Magazine, WSJ. Magazine as well as a myriad of other editorial collaborations over the years.

The photographic process is as much about the production of the image as it is the investment in a community of makers. With the goal of creating space for independent dialogue, exchange, and collaboration within the art and photographic communities, in 2008 I co-founded an independent zine & book press PWP (Pau Wau Publications) that I ran with the designer Brian Paul Lamotte for over 10 years. PWP became our foundation to not only help and actively encourage young image-makers to pursue their own ideas, but also to inspire ourselves in the process.

Prior to retiring PWP in late 2018, pivoting to work on other projects to explore some new directions, since the imprint’s inception we had created 53 unique publications and worked with over 60 artists, as well as participating every year at Printed Matter’s Art Book Fair in both NY and LA since 2011 and 2013 respectively. PWP led us to collaborating and engaging with both Lele Saveri’s 8-Ball Zines and The Newsstand initiatives – our project “Zine Time” (a vending machine that we produced specifically for these endeavors) was acquired and displayed at MoMA’s Ocean of Images: New Photography 2015 exhibit, and subsequently travelled to the Fondation Louis Vuitton in France, on display during the Being Modern: MoMA in Paris 2017exhibition. Both entries included a special one-off event that we curated; allowing visitors to use our vending machine and receive a free unique zine for each event.

With a keen interest in education and pedagogy, I contribute regularly as a visiting artist, class instructor and portfolio critic via inspiring institutions and platforms such as the Fashion Institute of Technology, International Center of Photography, Parsons School of Design at The New School, Pratt Institute, Red Hook Labs & the School of Visual Arts, as well as organizing special zine workshops and collaborations with major galleries such as Gavin Brown’s enterprise and with brands like Converse CONS. In 2017 I mentored a 17-year-old high-school student off-site through their membership at Red Hook Labs, supporting their pursuit and dreams of a future career in photography as well as mentoring one student through their first major photoshoot commissioned by The Women’s National Basketball Association. More recently, also collaborating with Red Hook Labs, I have orchestrated summer workshops for the students in medium and large format photography, culminating in a special zine-making workshop. Additionally, last summer I was honored to lead a photographic workshop for the Red Hook Community Justice Center | Center for Court Innovation in conjunction with their on-going partnership at Red Hook Labs.

I am currently the Artist Educator at Dia:Beacon for the Dia Teens program 2019 – 2020, where I liaise with the education directors to formulate a yearlong syllabus, lesson plans and workshops for bi-weekly onsite classes at Dia:Beacon’s learning lab, as well pivoting to develop, research and strategize weekly on-line classes during the COVID-19 pandemic, encouraging at-home assignments and activities as well as a 4-day-a-week summer intensive digital workshop program.

Commercially, I have been privileged to work and contribute to the artistic vision of brands such as Adidas, Burberry, Pierre Balmain & Rag + Bone, and since 2014 my work has been included in three special monographs with the artists Raymond Pettibon(To Wit, 2014), Jordan Wolfson (California, 2015) and Carol Bove (Polka Dots, 2016), all published by David Zwirner Books.

I currently live and work in Brooklyn, New York.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

I have always had a fascination with duration, repetition and longevity, and how they relate to the arc of one’s life. I am curious about what happens to people over time.

Within a photographic context, I have the propensity to attach myself to the people and things that intrigue me; in my photographic meditation on juvenescence, I often create icons of the characters I find myself connected to, ultimately exploring what the transition from youth into adulthood means.

I have always sought to withhold critical objectivity in my work with an attempt and a desire to position myself in a way that creates space for intimacy and empathy between the photographer and the participants involved, whilst somehow amalgamating myself within the imagery itself.

My printed objects – my zines and books – act as a vehicle to compress visual representations of these themes and create an intimate space and proximity in which the viewer can have their own conversation with the work.

I tend to use a variety of instruments and materials to serve my visual language, and though it may be perceived as being (consistently) inconsistent, the methodology of my approach is self-contained within an overseeing arc. Despite the variety of techniques that I employ, at its core, my photography always addresses the same fundamental themes.

Every project is an exercise in trust and collaboration and as such these nuances often determine the way I decide to interpret and create the imagery. My foremost objective is to build relationships within the narrative I am exploring. Some of the questions I explore through my process are: what am I gaining from this experience outside of the photographs themselves? As a human being, where do these explorations take me and what kind of relationships am I fortifying?

With my commercially lead work, I still try to employ these qualities in the work that I produce and am acutely aware of the organising principles and constraints of fusing my work within a commercial context. It has afforded me the opportunity to work with a different frame of mind; to be flexible with my process has been beneficial to me and has encouraged me to grow in many ways.

I see my publishing endeavours as being equally valuable to all my creative facets, and my exploration in all these alternate modes of creativity has nurtured the discovery of my own personality and as an artist.
