Menzies’ use of media and his unrestrained freedom in the execution of his work produce a darker adult version of the raw, childlike ingenuity that will very soon litter your walkways. However, don’t let this tame, pedestrian image fool you. The chalky popsicle- oranges, fire engine-reds and kool-aid blues assault the canvas to create a zoo of distorted creatures. From the Beatlejuice-like limbs crisscrossing the canvas to the giant bumble bee torsos that sprout six human arms and primitive masked heads; Menzies creates a dark but playful fantasy land.
Don’t miss your opportunity to come play where the wild things are at La Petite Mort.

Artist Statement:
“This new work is an evolution of past work. It maintains both dark, and playful elements that can be seen in past works, through use of color, texture and themes. However, these pieces show a new deliberately bold appeal to them through the use of heavy line making and consistent imagery.
The continued use of mediums such as acrylic paint, pastel, charcoal, graphite and conte present themselves with new confidence with their return on canvas.
Thematically, this new work deals with the ideas of home, insecurities, hope, frustrations, forgiveness and happiness”. Hayden Menzies, 2008
