Show statement:
A photograph has the power to elicit sentimentality, an emotion connected to memory. It also has the power to trigger other parts of the human psyche and this is what Osheen Harruthoonyan draws out within his B-Sides series. At once memento mori, wistful paradigms of nature and days gone by, his photographs are lasting and powerfully evocative. B-sides are stunning works that capture your soul and give flight to your mood.- Christina Anastassopoulos, 2011
Artist Statement:
My most recent work plays with still life subjects inspired by old master paintings. These paintings use fruit, flowers, animals and other organics as icons of mortality, adding a new layer of contemplation and reverence to the subjects. Altering each negative by hand, the photographic works crystallize midway between the calculable and the spontaneous. By printing these fragile and temporary subjects on large-scale fiber paper and hand processing them in various chemical processes, they become symbols of sentimentality while maintaining strong contemporary sensibilities.- Osheen Harruthoonyan, 2011
