HAVANA 1994 – 2018

Influenced by his career at the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), David has travelled to Havana 26 times to document life on the street, complete assignments for UNICEF, CIDA, IDRC and to instruct one week photo workshops for the Ottawa School of Art and SPAO.

He gratefully acknowledges the support of a Mid-Career Canada Council Grant in 1999 to continue his work in Havana. He has exhibited the project at Carleton University Art Gallery, Ottawa School of Art, Contact Photo Festival in Toronto and the Vancouver Public Art Gallery.

All of the photographs in this project are produced with black and white film using a variety of different cameras.

David Barbour is a landscape, travel and street photographer currently based in Ottawa, Canada, where he instructs photography workshops and continues his lifelong commitment of documenting people, places and things with his camera.

Some career highlights include a World Press Award (1985) for a photograph taken in Egypt and a Mid-Career Canada Council Grant (1999) to continue his work in Havana.

David gratefully acknowledges the National Film Board of Canada Still Photography Division/Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography, led by Martha Langford and Martha Hanna, who motivated and inspired him to be the best he could be for over 50 years.
