La Petite Mort Gallery holds a strong international focus, continually working to collaborate and bridge dialogue across and between different global spaces. Given that the art world now operates on a global scale, the gallery sees geographical ‘distance’ as an opportunity to connect across particular contemporary art scenes, and further, as means to develop new ways of representing artists and supporting their careers.
Recently, La Petite Mort Gallery has extended its international reach with various exhibitions, workshops and programs held in cities that include New York City (USA), Santiago (Chile), Buenos Aires (Argentina), and recently, Mexico City (Mexico).
La Petite Mort Gallery is pleased to continue this collaboration with MILK Studios & Mimik Magazine (Amsterdam, Holland), and looks toward the cross-cultural dialogues the exchange will produce.
For Mimik, we present ‘FLESH GARDEN, a project co-curated by Annelies Kietselaer, Mimik Magazine (Amsterdam) & Guy Berube, La Petite Mort Gallery (Ottawa, Canada).

PRESS RELEASE:
Mimik Magazine & La Petite Mort Gallery transforms Amsterdam brothel into art garden
The two story brothel in Amsterdam’s Red Light District has never been used to show art, music and performances. Mimik Magazine will transform this former house of pleasure into an art experience on July 10, 11 and 12, eloquently named ‘Flesh Garden’.
Multi-dimensional art experience
Visitors enter the exhibition via a red illuminated brothel room. Soundscapes inspired by the artworks will lead the visitors through the exhibition. Every room offers a new atmosphere and ambience. A multi-dimensional experience where art, music and performance against the backdrop of the old brothels blend into an artistic garden of organic structures. There are few places where the body and sexuality play such a big part as in a brothel. “We want to challenge visitors to experience and look at the human figure from a different perspective”, says Annelies Kietselaer curator and editor-in-chief of Mimik Magazine.
Confronting and human
Over twenty national and international artists take the curious visitors into their vision of humans and bodies. Marcus Koppen, 3rd prize winner of the Dutch Silver Camera Award in 2011, gives a unique outlook on Thai lady boys with his series ‘The Girl Got Balls’. Eva Lansink’s sculptures show the human urges and state that there is nothing wrong with sexual fantasies. Also the long-duration performance ‘Magoa’ by Cynthia Wiemers will premiere at Flesh Garden. A sharp display of what people do and don’t show to the outside world. Confronting and human at the same time.
Appetite for Subversivism
Mimik Magazine found its match in Canadian gallery La Petite Mort; both have an appetite for subversive art. The gallery is coming over to Amsterdam with works of artists from Canada and the U.S. that have never been exhibited in Europe before. “We immediately knew we wanted to work together on the Flesh Garden project. Mimik Magazine sees chances and grabs them”, Guy Berube director of La Petite Mort explains. “We recognize the brothels as a site possessing a certain potential to cultivate imagination. The selection of artists depicts this concept, with works that represent the idea of flesh with uniqueness in style and character”.
Flesh Garden soundscapes and podcasts
Professional music producers like Maarten Nauw (Dark Allies), Robin Kampschoer (Immersion Paris), Raoul Santos (Triphouse Rotterdam) Tibor Kocsis (TK305) and Lex van Dop (leXvanDop) will make soundscapes especially for Flesh Garden. The soundscapes are inspired by the works of art at the exhibition. The podcasts will be launched end of June via www.soundcloud.com/mimikmagazine.
About Mimik Magazine
Mimik Magazine is founded by Annelies Kietselaer in 2012. She works together with various creatives to promote the philosophy of the magazine. Mimik collects (magazine) and connects (events) people who see what Mimik sees: the beauty of imperfection. Mimik selects artists who show this unpolished version of life.
