Who’s a good doggie? Local madcap curator, Missy Marston-Shmelzer has given some of her favourite artists a peculiar assignment: present yourself in your chosen medium as a dog. The results of this experiment will be featured in a month-long group show at La Petite Mort Gallery, opening Friday, June 6, 2008. The show will feature dozens of works, in a variety of media, by both local artists and out-of-towners.
Artists featured include: Jessica Gordon, Sandy Groebner, Jeremiah Degrandpre, Alain Houde, Michael Deforge, Mike Lilley, Scott Everingham, Christina Riley, Paul Sharp, Kristy Gordon, Graham Robinson, Peter Shmelzer, Scott Ferry, Theo Pelmus, Yvon Benoit, and more.
Both dog-lovers and art-lovers will enjoy this show, which is full of surprises. There are dogs in dresses who wear glasses; gleeful, leaping, bone-chasing dogs; dogs reading books; and dogs that look as though they might be possessed by the devil. There is even a dog that is a chicken. Something for everyone!
The pieces in the show are small-scale self-portraits (all are 12” x 12” or smaller) and they give the impression of being secrets, or admissions, carefully shared. It is an adventure to examine each small piece and to venture a guess about why a particular artist might see himself or herself in this particular way. Some suggest an obvious meaning, while others are utterly mysterious. All are entertaining and endearing.
Don’t miss this one of a kind show, perfect for first-time art buyers and old hands alike. Give a puppy a good home!
Thank you,
