Mid Century Set of 2 Unique Drawings of Friends’ Portraits 1938

This is a wonderful & unique set of two drawings of friends doing portraits of each other at the same time, based on the written information done by the subject in the drawings. The ‘Man with Red Tie with Checkered Background & Flowers’ is signed David Sortor (see how it matches the portrait drawing, in the other drawing). Measures 11 x 14 inches. One mild crease but in very good condition. Medium looks like charcoal & colored pencil. Hand written on envelope containg drawings ‘Portrait David was painting while Irving painted Mike being painted by David Sortor’.

Second drawing is a depiction of the subject having his portrait done. Measures 14.25 x 11.25 inches. Signed & Titled lower right of drawing; ‘Mike having his portrait done by Mr. Sortor – 1/14/39 – Irving’. Verso has hand written in pencil, framing instructions. Minor creases & aging, but overall, great condition. Handwritten notes on envelope say; ‘Drut – Irving painting Mike being painted by David Sortor. 1/14/39. The apartment shown by Irving was the penthouse on 55th st. opposite the St. Regis – which Irving shared with Richard and Isabelle Kelly’.
