Testimonial: “In his art, Schmelzer visually represents an abject world of absurdity, insanity, perversity and ugliness. His paintings depict humanoid and animated creatures that seem to speak for all these dark and destructive forces that, in fact, constitute an indelible part of what is to be a human”. – interview by Ralitsa Doncheva, 2007
Statement:
“Our lives are punctuated by the events we have decided are pivotal and mark our passage from one phase to another. These occasions act as the structure upon which we build our lives and allow us to compartmentalize and thereby comprehend what would otherwise be, viewed in whole, incomprehensible.
These paintings utilize some of the conventions of commercial greeting cards combined with figures both human and animal, or something in between. The work is startling; in the same moment it is both comfortably familiar and upsetting, while retaining a sense of humour”. – Peter Shmelzer, 2010
