BIO:

Andrea Szilasi finds her inspiration in science magazines and anatomy books. But however fascinated she may be with the inner workings of the human body, how it is quantified or depicted, hers is not a documentary interpretation of the corporeal. Rather, she casts her gaze upon the fragility of the body and ultimately upon the human condition. Szilasi confers a barren, ascetic quality to her images just as she strips the space of cultural clues or context, she strips the central figure as well. When she focuses on human sexuality, for instance, she creates non-culturally specific, decontextualized hybrids. Like other artists working in the past decade, she relies on several destabilizing devices and distancing effects such as blurring the image, inverting the figure, weaving two photographs together; these elements combine to produce a cinematic impression.

MORE:

Andrea Szilasi lives and works in Montreal. She holds an MFA in Studio Arts (Photography) from Concordia University (2016), a BFA in Studio Arts (Painting and Drawing) from Concordia University (1991), and a BA in Film Studies and French Language and Literature from the University of Toronto (1988). Andrea Szilasi is a photo-based artist whose work examines the representation of the human body in the photographic medium.

Since 1994, her work has been presented in many solo and group exhibitions across Canada, the United States, Mexico and Europe. Szilasi’s work has been most notably shown at Joyce Yahouda Gallery between 2003 and 2017 (Canada), the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (Canada, 2016), the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (Canada, 2015), the Musée d’art contemporain de Baie-Saint-Paul (Canada, 2015), the Rencontres internationales de la photographie en Gaspésie (Canada, 2015), Spacewomb Gallery in New York (United States, 2015), the Musée régional de Rimouski (Canada, 2006), the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography (Canada, 2000)Kunstverein das weisse haus (Austria, 2008), and Centro de la Imagen (Mexico, 2000).

Szilasi’s work has been featured in several publications including Femmes artistes du XXe siècle au Québec, published by the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, and the Musée virtuel de la photographie québécoise published by Vox Populi.

Andrea Szilasi’s work is included in several public and private collections including the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography (of the National Gallery of Canada), the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, the Laurentian Bank of Canada, Cirque du Soleil, and Loto-Québec.
