Andy Warhol’s affinity for glamour and style and the fashion industry’s infatuation with him are undisputed facts of pop art and pop culture history. The obviousness of the connection makes the failings of this exhibition catalog all the more surprising. The problme is that for all the research that clearly went into packing these pages with thousands of archival items?from commercial artwork of the 1950s to Warhol’s personal collection of Hollywood 8″x10″ lossies to Interview magazine covers?there seems to be little motivation beyond documenting the obvious. Compiled by the staff of the Andy Warhol Museum, who also put together the show which will travel from its current New York City venue to Toronto, Pittsburgh and three overseas locations, the book’s lack of a compelling thesis reduces its purpose to little more than a portable archive of fashion-related Warholiana. As such, this is best suited as a visual companion to The Andy Warhol Diaries (Warner, 1989) for the home library; recommended only for large art or fashion collections. – Eric Bryant, “Library Journal”
Synopsis:
From his childhood in the 1930s, when he collected Hollywood fan mags and publicity photos, Andy Warhol was obsessed with glamour, style and fashion. After moving to New York in 1949 he soon made his mark in the world of advertising and commercial art and when he turned to fine art in the 1960s, fashion and commercial imagery continued to pervade his work.
This book illustrates the decisive impact of his work on fashion and glamour and how that involvement and the ‘Warhol Style’ have powerfully influenced contemporary art. The book takes us on a grand tour of Warhol’s passion for the swank and the chic: the publicity shots of Marilyn Monroe; his fashion drawings of the 1950s; photos of his dept. store window displays; the ‘silver factory’ works of the 1960s that blurred the lines between avant-garde and popular culture; his explorations of the gender identity; and INTERVIEW magazine and the downtown club scene, epicentres of style and trendsetting.Book Description:
* Today’s merging of art and fashion is in large measure the legacy of Andy Warhol.
